Chanté par l'une des plus grandes figures du rock grec Vasilis Papaconstantinou, ce célèbre poème de Kostas Karyotakis a été mis en musique par Yannis Glezos (Γιάννης Γλέζος).

ΠΡΕΒΕΖΑ

Θάνατος είναι οι κάργες που χτυπιούνται
στους μαύρους τοίχους και τα κεραμύδια,
θάνατος οι γυναίκες, που αγαπιούνται
καθώς να καθαρίζουνε κρεμμύδια.

Θάνατος οι λεροί, ασήμαντοι δρόμοι
με τα λαμπρά, μεγάλα ονόματά τους,
ο ελαιώνας, γύρω η θάλασσα, κι ακόμη
ο ήλιος, θάνατος μες στους θανάτους.

Θάνατος ο αστυνόμος που διπλώνει
για να ζυγίση μια "ελλειπή" μερίδα,
θάνατος τα ζουμπούλια στο μπαλκόνι,
κι ο δάσκαλος με την εφημερίδα.

Βάσις, Φρουρά, Εξηκονταρχία Πρεβέζης.
Την Κυριακή θ' ακούσουμε την μπάντα.
Επήρα ένα βιβλιάριο Τραπέζης
πρώτη κατάθεσις δραχμαί τριάντα.

Περπατώντας αργά στην προκυμαία,
"Υπάρχω;" λες, κ' ύστερα "δεν υπάρχεις!"
Φτάνει το πλοίο. Υψωμένη σημαία.
Ισως έρχεται ο Κύριος Νομάρχης.

Αν τουλάχιστον, μέσα στους ανθρώπους
αυτούς, ένας επέθαινε από αηδία...
Σιωπηλοί, θλιμμένοι, με σεμνούς τρόπους,
θα διασκεδάζαμε όλοι στην κηδεία.

PREVEZA

Death is the bullies bashing
against the black walls and roof tiling,
death is the women being loved in the course of onion peeling.

Death the squalid, unimportant streets
with their glamorous and pompous names,
the olive-grove, the surrounding sea, and even the sun, death among all other deaths.

Death the policeman bending over
to weigh, a "lacking" portion,
death the harebells on the balcony and the teacher with the newspaper.

Base, Guard, Sixty-man Prevezian Rule.
On Sunday we'll listen to the band.
I've taken out a savings booklet, my first deposit drachmas thirty one.

Walking slowly on the quay,
"do I exist?" you say, and then: "you do not!"
The ship approaches. The flag is flying. Perhaps Mr. Prefect will be coming.

If at least, among these people,
one would die of sheer disgust
silent, bereaved, with humble manners,
at the funeral we'd all have fun.

Kostas Karyotakis (Κώστας Καρυωτάκης, 1896-1928) shot himself in Preveza (a town in the North West of Greece).

This video is extract from the film Karyotakis by Tassos Psaras (2009), a biography of the poet (english subtitles). The movie has been shown on the greek TV channel ERT.
